Business backed hosting company a must?

I am going to start hosting websites. Do I need to have a company behind all of it or can I start without one and start my own after I begin to make money.
Besides the hosting service I am going to have another site that is going to have an online store. The store is going to sell music bands merch. It is a service we are going to offer apart of another big site. I also live in CA.
